The Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia is putting the NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMIN to work. Engineers are testing flat-plate flaps without any cutouts in the wings and other flaps made with Clark Y sections, featuring corresponding gaps where the wings would normally be intact. The test data shows a slight decrease in drag for wings fitted with flaps made of airfoil sections. With 20% flap-to-wing chord gaps and nose-to-edge locations at 80%, engineers can confidently report excellent aileron control with almost zero buffeting or turbulence to boot!
