Geo Verbanck, a skilled sculptor from Ghent and East Flanders, made his mark with masterpieces crafted from bluestone, marble, sandstone, and bronze. Born on February 28, 1881, Geo Verbanck began honing his skills in the workshops of carpenters and sculptors before furthering his education at the Royal Academy in Ghent and Brussels. He also apprenticed under renowned Ghent sculptor Alois de Beule. Verbanck's talent led him to become a sculpture teacher in Dendermonde, where he collaborated with Valentin Vaerwyck on the construction of the new courthouse. Among his notable works are tombs at the Campo Santo, medals and coins designed for commemorative purposes, busts, and intricate drawings. His artistic prowess was also showcased in the monument to the brothers Van Eyck, designed by Vaerwyck, near the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent. Public buildings have benefited from his skillful integration of bas-reliefs, as requested by architects and authorities.
