NA Style Flute Kit for 3/4 PVC Pipe
thingiverse
These parts were designed to be combined with a length of 3/4" PVC pipe, a 3 foot length of strong cord, and half of a wine bottle cork to make a quick, easy, playable flute. There are instructions available online for building flutes, but the main thing is you will need a 1/2" drill bit (or step drill) for the two holes under the sound hole part. This part has a protrusion underneath that will fit into one of the holes, and the other hole should be drilled in the PVC pipe to line up with the sound hole. Cut a wine bottle cork in half and using a dowel, stuff it into the pipe between the two 1/2" holes. Tuning the flute is a matter of preference, and there are a lot of ways to approach it. But this print will make the hard part a lot easier. Use tree supports. I like to use 75% infill on the sound hole part, and 25% infill on the saddle and mouthpiece. You might need a thin layer of tape to make the mouthpiece snug. I used a 20 inch long length of pipe. To drill the holes, you will first mark a spot 3 13/16" from the end of the flute and drill a 1/2" dia. hole. Then mark and drill another 1/2" dia. hole 5 5/8" from the same end and in a straight line. The mouthpiece edge of this hole should end up just behind or in line with the back (mouthpiece) edge of the sound hole. And, the cork should also be lined up with the back edge of the hole as well. Then you will measure from the opposite end of the pipe and drill six holes using a 5/16" drill bit, in line with the first two 1/2" holes. From the distal end of the pipe, drill holes at 4.394", 5.732", 7.092", 7.902", 9.035", and 9.85". These measurements were derived using the "Flutomat" calculator on flutopedia.com. This should give you a flute tuned to G4. To secure everything, I used a 3 foot length of 550 paracord with the inner strands stripped out, and a clove hitch to start, followed by alternating wraps and a couple of square knots. UPDATE: I have modified the sound hole and saddle from a circular peg and hole to a rectangle to allow for a little front to back adjustment to help dial out overblowing the fundamental note.
