BCHM3X82 Assignment by ELISEUS FENG & WILLIAM ZHOU The N8 Neuraminidase enzyme breaks down sialic acid's glycosidic bonds, allowing the virus to escape from cells and spread throughout the body unchecked. Sialic acid is a crucial building block of bacteria cell walls and is found in high concentrations at synapses between neurons, facilitating communication within the nervous system. The annotations highlight key binding sites where antiviral drugs interact with the enzyme's active site, as well as changes in protein structure that occur during this process. Oseltamivir, an antiviral medication, targets influenza A and B viruses, but recent mutations have led to drug resistance. The annotations also reveal potential binding sites for future antiviral compounds, enabling the development of more effective treatments.
