Ménsula 2, Pazo de Xelmírez

GAL Mensula, Salón of the Palace of Xelmírez, circa XIII. (Santiago de Compostela) This mensula of the eastern wall is the only one where musicians stand up, wearing shoes and a tunic down to mid-leg. The musician in the center holds an arpa with a mutilated sound box as well as the union of this with the column and caravilleiro. The musician on the left holds a viola oval at the moment of tuning, with his right hand holding a bow while searching for the ideal tension of a string. He shows in a very visible way where the fifth string enters the caravilleiro type bordón and goes out through the mast. It reveals the double ribbing of a lateral acanalado and a non-flat bottom but rather an open angle. The musician to the right blows a double flute, an instrument barely represented in religious iconography. In Galicia, it appears on some arquivolta such as the main door of the monastery of San Lourenzo de Carboeiro and the Pórtico do Paraíso of the Ourense Cathedral. ► 3D Model by Studo3D
