To measure the properties of tensile strength in steel, a test piece must be extended at a fixed speed while continuously measuring its extension as the applied force or load increases, as would be expected from Hooke's law until the elastic limit and beyond. The test piece and machine configuration require specifications published by a standards organization. This specifies sample preparation, fixation, calibre length, analysis, etc.
