Significance and Research Object: Native American (Sioux Tribe) Feathered Headdress President: Calvin Coolidge Details: During his presidency, Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924. To express a sense of gratitude and establish a new relationship between the government and Native Americans, the Sioux tribe welcomed President Coolidge into their community by presenting him with a feather headdress as a symbol of unity. Throughout his presidency, Coolidge was a strong advocate for tribal cultural rights. He felt great sympathy for the Native American community due to their harsh treatment and poor living conditions during the years of persecution and forced assimilation (during the Jackson presidency). President Coolidge met with several tribal leaders to further strengthen relations after the signing of the Native American Citizenship Act. In addition, he accepted tribal membership from the Sioux tribe. Contribution: This act granted Native Americans voting rights and citizenship. The act was a response to the Native Americans' involvement in the military during World War I, when 10,000 Native Americans participated despite not being considered American citizens. President Coolidge signed the act not only to grant citizenship but also to give Native Americans the chance to integrate into American society. As a result, some Native Americans became farmers. Impact on America: After a long history of disenfranchisement with the Native American community, Native Americans were finally recognized as Americans after President Coolidge signed the act. They were given rights and citizenship, which led to numerous job opportunities. Sources: Calvin Coolidge: First Sitting Prez Adopted by Tribe Starts Desecration of Mount Rushmore. (2016, July 26).
