My personal Katana - Maker style
pinshape
One year ago, I created and showcased in our Lab in Milan one Katana, utilizing a single-piece 3D model designed by Gungn1r on Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:351917. I broke down his model into parts and then assembled it, which was a time-consuming process but yielded an aesthetically pleasing result. You can view some images of the finished product on our website at www.italymaker.com. What I disliked about the printed Katana was its fragility; it was impossible to handle or play with it without causing damage due to the polymers being significantly different from metal, resulting in a poor weight and feeling experience. Recently, I decided to design my own Katana, incorporating an interior 6 mm threaded rod running from the bottom to top to enhance robustness and stiffness, aiming to create a true "Maker Style" Katana that is specifically designed for 3D printing. At the same time, I enjoyed designing a new concept of blade while respecting traditional shapes but introducing a "Maker look" with holes showcasing the rod inside. I personally created the Kashira and Tsuba, and made a realistic samegawa. As you can see, my work's theme is cherry flowers, which are featured in the Hamon, Kashira, and Tsuba. After that, I printed all the parts using a new, very strong ABS material, assembled them with acetone glue. All you need to do is attach the 6 mm rod and... be patient! If you need this Katana, just ask; I'm ready to print it for you.
