Replacing the Ashtray on a First-Generation Mazda Miata/ MX-5 NA. To remove the ashtray from your 1st gen Na mazda miata, follow these steps: 1. Open the glove box to access the screws holding it in place. 2. Remove two 8mm bolts that hold the ashtray cover in position. 3. Gently pull the cover away from the dash and out of its retaining clips. 4. Locate the wires connected to the cigarette lighter receptacle, then disconnect them by pulling them straight off. 5. Pull the ashtray out of its socket, taking care not to damage any surrounding trim or wiring. Replace the old ashtray with your new one, making sure it clicks securely into place before reconnecting the wires and reattaching the cover. Note: Removing the ashtray will expose a small area where water can enter when driving in rainy conditions. To prevent this, you may want to apply some sealant or silicone grease around the edges of the opening.
