MX5 MIATA 5SPEED SHIFT KNOB
thingiverse
I took a close look at a bunch of 3d printed shift knobs that were scattered around me. Some were straightforward and uncomplicated, while others were intricate and complex. It seemed they lacked heft. The biggest drawback of 3d printing a shift knob is ultimately it's just a chunk of plastic. My trusty 2002 Mazda Miata has a respectable shift knob so as an experiment I decided to measure that up. Here are the results! Its design consists of three parts, including a cavity for holding weights. Initially, my idea was to use lead solder and wrap the inside cavity. However, I have since opted for using bird shot instead, which will be a quicker solution (stay tuned for an update). The shift pattern at the top didn't print out as I had envisioned, so I'll likely need to add additional tops (6spd, 4spd, no spd...). Mine assembled together seamlessly, but I'd recommend adding some glue to make it more secure. The hole in the knob is a standard 10mm diameter and non-threaded.
