MVX Horn RB Speaker Base Neck and Bell
thingiverse
I've been recreating these for customers over 20 years now. Some have been carefully crafted from soft steel, aluminum, cast resin, and injection mold. I updated the drawings to a Fusion 360 base and simplified them for FDM and easier part fitment. If you need super detailed instructions, just let me know. However, these are the basic outlines. Every time I make one, it's tailored to meet specific customer requirements, so a single set of drawings won't suffice. The bell I printed with a .8 nozzle because I hate waiting - instead, I hog plastic out faster. The Bell and Neck halves print well and quickly without supports at a .2-.3 height. Surface finish isn't a major concern for me since I spend plenty of time on finishing and often use different materials. For example, some early horns from this period had thick wrinkle finishes, while others featured smooth black bakelite or steel finishes. The base is up to you - I craft mine by hand from wood, just like the originals, or exotics upon request. Inside the speaker base, I use either a 2" or 3" heavy magnet speaker. The sound is period-accurate due to the funnel-shaped baffle (with the speaker mounted between the baseplate and the baffle). Sound is compressed in the baffle then expands up through the neck and out the bell, just like the original design using a fixed electromagnet (no affixed voice coil). I drive them with either small PCB mono amplifiers or tube mono block 40-or-so watt amplifiers. Just ensure you calculate your impedance correctly. Two necks are included: one has a raked step (bell angled up, similar to the original Edison design), while the other is the Magnavox-styled balanced neck (I find this neck superior, especially with weight handling). If you want, a simple search will yield several places to purchase magnavox decal replacements. These guys do an excellent job - some decals are even printed in metal foil with true white that looks great. Again, apologies if I missed anything in the conversions. I'm still trying to figure out how to embed the video. The bottom trim ring for the base has a minor artifact, but it prints just fine. If you have kids or pets, have fun using this as a makeshift megaphone - stick it in your ears like Bloodbath McGrath from Wild Wild West and enjoy!
