Ford unveiled the Shelby GT500 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011, making it the most powerful Mustang on the market at that time. The DOHC 4 valves per cylinder 5,812 cc (354.7 cu in) supercharged and intercooled V8 engine is certified to produce 662 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 855 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a claimed top speed of 202 mph. Weighing in at 3,850 lb, the new GT500 was available from May 2012. The 2013 models saw significant improvements over their 2012 counterparts, including new front end sheet metal and standard HID headlamps. A new LED tail light assembly was also introduced, along with a sleek design that eliminated the need for a traditional grill due to its massive cooling requirements. Performance enhancements included twin fuel pumps, larger fuel injectors, a grippier clutch, and a beefed-up transmission. The 2013 Shelby GT500 boasted larger Brembo front disc brakes, reinforced axle tubes, and aerodynamic tweaks to reach speeds of over 200 mph safely. According to Ford, these changes resulted in a 14-percent reduction in drag and a 66-percent increase in front-end downforce. Additional features included a larger front anti-roll bar, retuned springs, an rpm-adjustable electronic launch-control function, and a four-mode electronic stability control system.
