Mustang P-51 Description Fighter plane during World War II. Single seat, single engine aircraft designed for Britain's Royal Air Force, entering service in 1941 and later adopted by U.S. Army Air Force. The original Mustang P-51 featured four .50-caliber machine guns and four .30-caliber machine guns along with a camera for photoreconnaissance; its top speed was 390 mph (630 kph). A later version, the P-51D, had six .50-caliber machine guns and reached speeds of up to 440 mph (700 kph). An outstanding long-range fighter plane, it played a major role in defeating Germany's air force, the Luftwaffe.
