The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter-bomber that served throughout World War II, the Korean War, and other intense conflicts. Developed in 1940 by North American Aviation (NAA), this cutting-edge aircraft was created to meet a pressing requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. Instead of building an outdated design from another company, North American Aviation proposed a bold new concept - a state-of-the-art fighter that would revolutionize air warfare. The NA-73X prototype airframe took shape on 9 September 1940, just 102 days after the contract was signed, and soared into the skies for its maiden flight on 26 October.
