The shell was unearthed from a quarter for enslaved servants at the Oak Hill plantation site (44PY440) through archaeological excavation. It was discovered in Room 1, Test Unit 1, Layer B, Feature 2's north half on November 15, 2015. A NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner captured its precise dimensions. Dr. Elizabeth Moore expertly identified it. The Virginia Museum of Natural History graciously provided access to this valuable artifact. Dr. Elizabeth A. Moore authored the report "Faunal Remains from 44PY0440, The Oak Hill Site" in 2017, submitted to Hurt & Proffitt and the Threatened Sites Committee of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. This object was meticulously scanned by the Virtual Curation Lab.
