Music Drop (Fixed Bits & Game Of Thrones Edition)
myminifactory
Left Field Labs hosted a project called Music Drop that allowed 3D printing enthusiasts to generate tunes online. The app produced STLs of music discs for use in a 3D printed music box. Unfortunately, LFL shut down the site, and it appears to be gone for good. When I thought dragons would never return to Westeros again - I generated a disc of the intro music from Game of Thrones and published it along with an egg shape version of the tear drop case. It's a tricky print, but neat once all the pieces come together. I'll paraphrase the original instructions and parts list, but you may find like I did some alternatives along the way. Parts & Supplies: 3D printed parts, obviously A fork from a music box with specific notes: Ab Bb Db Eb F Ab Bb C Db Eb F F Ab C Db Eb Eb F 2 machine screws with 4 nuts. Original instructions call for 4-40 x ⅜", I used M3s x 10mm. Super glue Sandpaper Needle nose pliers Patience Assembly: [Case - getting ready] Find two holes on the case and place 2 pan head machine screws from the back. Use screw nuts to hold both screws in place. As you can see, I put the screws in a different way with the fork, washers as spacers, through the case and nuts behind it. [Handle] Put the knob (small sphere) through the handle and glue the small cap inside. Glue the square of the handle to the square hole on the small gear. Make sure the pole of the handle is positioned at the center of the small gear. Place the handle at the bottom of the case, slightly pushing the half-circle plate in to avoid breaking the axis of the small gear. When test-spinning, ensure the handle feels smooth and quiet. If it's too tight and squeaky, try sanding the handle pole where it spins and touches the case. After making sure it spins smoothly, glue the cap to fix the handle. [Disc] Place the big gear on the pole so that the gear sits on the triangle of the pole. Match the square under the gear to the triangle. Glue the top surface of the gear and place the disc on the pole. Once dried, place the pole in the case and snap the disc between 3 fixers in the case. Squeeze the case if necessary. Place the fork through the screws and align it correctly with the music you created. Reference your music grid from the website - note that the website grid is missing some notes from the fork. Screw 2 nuts to hold the fork in place, eventually arranging them: screw - case plate - nut - fork - nut. Enjoy your Music Drop!
