The Agaricus bisporus, a white button mushroom, serves as the standard for this term. Mushrooms commonly have a stem, cap, and gills; however, the name also applies to other gilled fungi with or without stems. These fungi produce microscopic spores that help spread them across surfaces. Deviations from the typical mushroom shape are often given distinct names like boletes, puffballs, stinkhorns, and morels. Gilled fungi may also be referred to as agarics. The term "mushroom" can additionally designate the entire organism in culture, its thallus (mycelium) forming fruiting bodies, or the species itself.
