The muscles of the face contribute to the opening and occlusion of the facial orifices, chewing and mimic expression. The muscles of the face can be separated into two groups: the muscles of mastication and the facial muscles. The muscles of mastication are the temporalis, external pterygoid, internal pterygoid, and masseter muscles. The facial muscles share three characteristics in common: they are innervated by the facial nerve, they have an insertion into the skin, and they are constrictors.
