Musashi Plains six-panel screen, one of a pair

We carefully examined this six-panel Japanese folding screen as part of a groundbreaking experiment; the top of the object is elegantly gilded. From its detailed description on artsmia.org: "A traditional Japanese folk song helps pinpoint this extraordinary location: 'The Musashi plains have no mountain into which the moon may set— it rises from the grass and sets in the grass.'" Although today the Musashi Plains north of Tokyo are largely hidden beneath a sprawling network of roads and apartment buildings, four hundred years ago they were a breathtakingly beautiful flatland of lush grasses and vibrant flowers, an uncommon sight in a country dominated by towering mountains.
