Mummy Skull with Skin (VCU_3D_5172)

This is the skull of a mummy with skin and hair named Nesiur who resides at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, Ohio. The cranium was extracted from a CT scan by Virginia Commonwealth University Forensic Anthropologist Terrie Simmons-Ehrhart. According to Jill E. Krieg-Accrocco, Curator of Anthropology and Exhibitions, Nesiur was unearthed at the Deir el-Bahari site in western Thebes in 1922 by H.E. Winlock of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deir el-Bahari is home to mortuary temples and tombs along the west bank of the Nile River. Nesiur was found buried in a chamber cut into the floor of a brick chapel. Her coffin and style of mummification indicate that Nesiur lived during the 25th Dynasty (circa 700 BC). She was given to the Museum in 1926.
