Mummy Portrait of a Bearded Man Culture: Egyptian Roman Place: Egypt Date: circa A.D. 150-170 Medium: Encaustic on linden wood panel Object Number: 74.AP.11 Dimensions: 37 × 21 cm (14 9/16 × 8 1/4 inches) A heavily bearded man with tightly curled black hair and thick eyebrows stands out in this funerary portrait, wearing a traditional white tunic with red clavi woven stripes. A mantle is draped over his left shoulder; at its lower edge, an "H" pattern suggests the presence of an embroidery motif. The encaustic technique shines in this portrait, with no ground layer beneath it. The artist applied paint directly to the linden wood, showcasing exceptional skill. The panel's upper corners are roughly cut at a slight diagonal, leaving a straight edge between them. This unique cutting style is associated with portraits from Er-Rubayat, setting it apart from others found in Hawara. Robin Symes, Limited (London), sold this piece to the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1974.
