Mummified oppossum

This natural Didelphis virginiana mummy was generously provided to the Virtual Curation Laboratory by young scholar Lowell Nugent, as documented here: https://vcuarchaeology3d.wordpress.com/2014/03/01/moche-madness-a-mummified-mammal-and-a-young-explorer/. At first glance, the naturally mummified opossum bears a striking resemblance to a rat. However, Digital Curation Supervisor Ashley McCuistion and then Digital Zooarchaeologist Mariana Zechini made an initial tentative identification of the specimen as a juvenile Didelphis virginiana. This identification was subsequently confirmed on March 19, 2014, by Dr. Elizabeth Moore, Curator of Archaeology at the Virginia Museum of Natural History.
