A multiple-effect evaporator efficiently harnesses steam heat to evaporate water by boiling it in successive vessels at decreasing pressures. Each vessel utilizes vapor from the previous one, needing only the initial vessel with highest pressure to have external heating. Though theoretically unlimited stages exist, practical applications usually involve four or less stages, while chemical recovery systems may use up to seven for optimal product extraction.
