The mugger crocodile, also known as the marsh crocodile or broad-snouted crocodile, is a native inhabitant of freshwater environments stretching from southern Iran to the Indian subcontinent. It has vanished from Bhutan and Myanmar and has been designated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1982. This medium-sized crocodile resides in lakes, rivers, marshes, and artificial ponds. Both juvenile and adult mugger crocodiles excavate burrows where they take refuge when temperatures plummet below 5°C (41°F) or soar above 38°C (100°F). Females create holes in the sand as nesting sites and lay up to 46 eggs during the dry season. The sex of hatchlings is determined by temperature during incubation. The mugger crocodile feeds on fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Young feed on insects. It shares its habitat with two other crocodilians in India: the saltwater crocodile (C. porosus) and the gharial (Gavialis gangeticus).
