Mucius Scaevola

Mucius Scaevola

As recorded by Livy in his History of Rome, young Roman nobleman Caius Mucius "Scaevola" earned his name for a bold act of defiance. Captured in Lars Porsena's Etruscan camp, the king he had come to assassinate, Scaevola made a daring statement by plunging his right hand into the flames of an altar, showcasing his contempt for life itself. Mosca honed his craft in Padua and Venice before emigrating to Poland around 1530. This classical-style high relief sculpture demonstrates the profound influence of Antonio and Tullio Lombardo, leading Venetian sculptors of the time, on Giovanni Maria Mosca's (active 1507-1574) work.
