This 7.2 meter diameter habitat was extensively studied by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center during the early-mid 2010s, for application in lunar orbital space stations and Mars transfer vehicles. For these applications, it would be used as a monolithic or near-monolithic design, containing all the living and working space needed for a fully-functioning station. The 7.2 meter diameter was selected as an intermediate point between 8.4 meters (built directly on tooling used for the tanks of the Space Launch System) and 4.6 meters (ISS-heritage modules), though it would still make use of SLS tooling for the truncated dome sections.
