The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is a 2015 American animated/live action adventure comedy film based on the popular Nickelodeon television series SpongeBob SquarePants created by Stephen Hillenburg. This film was released in 2015 and serves as a sequel to the 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Paul Tibbitt, who is both a show writer and executive producer, directed this movie, while Tibbitt, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, along with SpongeBob creator and executive producer Hillenburg, handled the writing duties. Stephen Hillenburg also served as an executive producer for this film, and Cale Boyter, Nan Morales, and Craig Sost co-executive produced it. The regular television cast of Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Clancy Brown, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence all return to reprise their respective roles from the series and previous film, while Antonio Banderas takes on a new live-action character in Burger-Beard the Pirate. This movie is produced by Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Movies, and United Plankton Pictures, and was distributed by Paramount Pictures. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water pays tribute to Ernest Borgnine, who originally voiced Mermaid Man before his passing in July 2012.
