The MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40), a submachine gun loaded with the 9x19mm Parabellum bullet, was developed in Nazi Germany and widely employed by Axis forces during World War II. Invented by Heinrich Vollmer in 1938, it was an advanced upgrade of its predecessor, the MP 38, and was highly sought-after by infantrymen, paratroopers, platoon leaders, and squad commanders on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Despite being erroneously dubbed "Schmeisser" by Allied forces, Hugo Schmeisser had no involvement in its design or production. Between 1940 and 1945, Erma Werke manufactured approximately 1.1 million units of the MP 40.
