Mozambique 2018 - Ancient dhow shipwreck ?
sketchfab
This model reveals an underwater space covering approximately 20 meters by 20 meters at its maximum dimensions. Within this area, preliminary ceramic analysis suggests that remnants of an ancient Indian Ocean pre-colonial dhow from the 14-15th century may be present. When Vasco de Gama first entered the bay surrounding Mozambique Island, he documented in his writings the presence of Indian Ocean dhows measuring up to 30 meters in length. These vessels were already navigating the ocean, trading African goods for Indian commodities. Sparse ceramic fragments and numerous ballast stones remain on site. Large pieces of wood are visible beneath a thin layer of sediment, parallel to each other. The photo acquisition was conducted by the Octopus Foundation team in early July 2018, providing support for the new underwater archaeology center on Mozambique Island.
