I decided not to wait for my shipment of MDF bases and instead whipped up this alternative solution. This tray is specifically designed to hold 8 figures, each mounted on a UK penny coin. I intentionally drilled the holes all the way through so they would be suitable for use with post-1992 coins. As a backing material, I'm using sign writer's magnetic sheeting, which costs around £6 for a sheet that measures 61x100cm. I cut it to shape and then trimmed it down to size. When paired with these newer coins, the result is a sturdy tray with a thickness of approximately 2.5mm - roughly half the thickness of some commercial MDF base products on the market. This little project was a simple affair (even for someone like me who's not exactly a master craftsman) and might save others a few minutes when making their own bases.
