Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York By 1897, Boston businessman James C. Melvin had commissioned a memorial monument from French artist Daniel Chester French to honor his three brothers who died in the Civil War. The original marble statue was completed in 1908 and erected at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts. Four years later, Melvin donated funds for this replica to be carved by French, which he gave to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1912.
