The renovation of Dijon's Musée des Beaux-Arts presents a unique chance for the historic loan of the alabaster mourners from John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Margaret of Bavaria's tomb. Each statuette stands approximately sixteen inches tall, crafted by Jean de La Huerta and Antoine Le Moiturier between 1443-1456 for the ducal tomb originally located in Champmol's church. Following Claus Sluter and colleagues' precedent for Duke Philip the Bold's (1342-1404) tomb, these statues showcase innovative designs characteristic of late Middle Ages artistry. The tombs are renowned as among the most extravagant and groundbreaking of their time. Their primary innovation lies in the space allocated to the figures of grieving mourners on the base of the tomb, which seem to pass through a cloister's real arcades.
