Mounting ring for Busch + Mueller IQ-X bicycle lamp
thingiverse
Busch + Mueller produces high-quality bicycle lights that stand out as the best dynamo-driven options available, in my opinion. Their products come with a hefty price tag, but for those who rely on them year-round, such as myself as an all-year commuter, the investment is well worth it. However, the company's major corporate misstep lies in the design of their top-of-the-line IQ-X front light. Although made from aluminum and featuring premium mounting hardware, this exceptional product has a plastic bracket that falls short of Busch + Mueller's usual standards. One day I discovered my bike with the lamp hanging limply from its cables due to a broken plastic bracket. Not surprisingly, a €100 headlamp would come with excellent spare parts service, right? Unfortunately, not so. Busch + Mueller does not sell this part as a replacement, even though it's a separate component that can be easily removed or glued. Fortunately for me, I have access to a CAD system, caliper, and 3D printer, allowing me to design and print my own replacement part within an hour of work. My design incorporates a slightly thicker shell and reinforced the area prone to breakage without compromising fit. Unfortunately, I had to sacrifice the sidelight function, as the original ring features a translucent section that lets some light shine out the sides of the lamp. Although possible to add later, it's problematic to print and requires the original cover for waterproofing. The new part printed perfectly on the first try, but a well-calibrated printer or some reworking time may be necessary due to its tight fit.
