A mountain bike or mountain bicycle is specifically designed for off-road cycling, featuring elements that enhance durability and performance in rugged terrain. These bikes often include features such as front or full suspension, large knobby tires, robust wheels, powerful brakes, straight handlebars, and low gear ratios for climbing steep inclines. Mountain bikes are typically ridden on unpaved surfaces with obstacles like rocks, roots, loose dirt, and steep grades, as well as technical trail features (TTFs) such as log piles, rock gardens, skinnies, gap jumps, and wall-rides. Since the sport's inception in the 1970s, various subtypes have emerged, including cross-country (XC), all-day endurance, freeride, downhill, and slalom, each with their own unique demands and optimal designs for performance. As a result, MTB development has led to increased suspension travel and gearing capabilities, facilitating both climbing and rapid descents. The 1x ('one-by') trend simplifies gearing by using one chainring in the front and a cassette at the rear with 9 - 12 sprockets for easier maintenance and operation.
