Mount Taranaki, or Mount Egmont, is a highly active stratovolcano that soars 2,518 meters above the west coast of New Zealand's North Island in the Taranaki region. Although locals refer to it as Taranaki, this iconic mountain has two official names under New Zealand Geographic Board's alternative names policy. As one of the world's most symmetrical volcanic cones, Mount Taranaki stands tall at 8,261 feet, with a secondary cone called Fanthams Peak (Panitahi in Māori) rising to 6,450 feet on its southern side. Its stunning resemblance to Japan's famous Mount Fuji made it an ideal filming location for the movie The Last Samurai.
