It lies 50 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon, and 96 miles south of Seattle, Washington. Mount St Helens gets its English name from Lord St Helens, a British diplomat who was a close friend of explorer George Vancouver that made an extensive survey of the area in the late 18th century. The volcano is located within the Cascade Range and forms part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, which includes over 160 active volcanoes as a segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This volcano is renowned for its ash explosions and pyroclastic flows.
