Mount Baker stands tall as a majestic stratovolcano in Washington's North Cascades, where the Lummi people call it Qwú’mə Kwəlshéːn and the Nooksack people refer to it as Kw’eq Smaenit or Kwelshán. This mountain is also known by its simpler name, Kulshan, or Koma Kulshan. Rising high above the Cascade Volcanic Arc, Mount Baker is a highly active volcano with a crater that ranks second in thermal activity within the entire Cascade Range, coming only after Mount Saint Helens. Situated approximately 31 miles east of Bellingham's city limits in Whatcom County, Mount Baker takes its place as the youngest volcano within the Mount Baker volcanic field. While volcanic activity has been present here for an impressive 1.5 million years, the current shape of the mountain is estimated to be no older than 140,000 years and possibly even younger at around 80–90,000 years. Glaciation has played a significant role in eroding away previous volcanic formations, leaving behind this modern, glaciated cone.
