A motte-and-bailey castle features a wooden or stone keep situated on an elevated earthwork called a motte, accompanied by a walled courtyard, or bailey, encircled by a defensive ditch and palisade. Constructed across northern Europe beginning in the 10th century, these castles spread from Normandy and Anjou in France into the Holy Roman Empire during the 11th century. The Normans introduced this design to England and Wales after their invasion in 1066. Adopted in Scotland, Ireland, the Low Countries, and Denmark during the 12th and 13th centuries.
