The motor driver could probably be implemented with just a 555 timer, but since I was planning on doing the LEDs, I already had it set up to use an Arduino (specifically an Arduino Pro Micro).

Code for the Arduino is at https://github.com/m000z0rz/triple-gear-motorized-base It doesn't do much - just checks a switch on the back to enable/disable the motor driver, reads the potentiometer value and uses that to drive a PWM signal for the motor, which is driven by a MOSFET.

Onshape design at https://cad.onshape.com/documents/0552dfa4b1d7c192a6e305b0/w/114c4090becab26200c3d38f/e/3de8c1beb8d372082bc91e2f

Parts:

Arduino Pro Micro https://www.amazon.com/HiLetgo-Atmega32U4-Bootloadered-Development-Microcontroller/dp/B01MTU9GOB/ref=sr_1_2?crid=17HWSD3BG4VDS&keywords=arduino+pro+micro&qid=1640138581&sprefix=arduino+pro+micro%2Caps%2C100&sr=8-2

Motor https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080DOEQU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

IRF520N MOSFET to drive the motor https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082J3F8HJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Three small rubber feet https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CNQC695/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A Schottkey diode harvested from something for motor protection

A potentiometer harvested from something random

A two-position switch harvested from something random
