I needed to replace the broken light shades on my overhead fixtures in my motorhome but since I replaced the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs there was a glare problem. The best fix was for me to print copies of the original which were clear with some that were obscured with a frosted look. I decided to use polycarbonate and they came out with a wonderful look to them. I didn't even clean them up afterward as they have a sort of crystal look to them and I am very pleased.

I sliced the model at .3mm and didn't need any support. The PC stuck wonderfully even with only two shells on the bottom and I didn't have to do anything to clean them up. I ran my extruder at 315C, printbed at 235C, speed 45mm/sec and my minimum layer time at 30 seconds.

Print Settings

Printer:

My home creation

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.3mm

Infill:

100%

Notes:

The thickness of these is based on the original and also on an even amount of .4mm nozzle shells so that there wouldn't be any voids in the print. I may try a hollow version with a single perimeter and a light infill when I have a chance (just for fun) but these came out with the look that I wanted so I didn't play with the print and just did a whole batch like this.

How I Designed This ===================
The actual thickness of the original that I was replacing was slightly thicker. I reduced the thickness so that it would leave me with an even amount of shells without any voids. I'm glad that I did for two reasons, ease of printing and ease of mounting the shade to the fixture. I did not have to clean up the print afterwards to get the mounting tabs through their holes as there was clearance, not much, and still a tight fit.

Category: Automotive
