Shade-Pole Single Phase Motors - These Electric Motors are characterized by their shading pole. Their construction and operating principles make them very stable over a wide range of load speeds, even with single-phase supply currents which can sometimes be somewhat unreliable. One of the defining characteristics is a cylindrical magnetic circuit with 4 to 8 pole shoe-shaped pieces embedded around it that produce two additional magnetic fields whose effect in the core induces some extra electromagnetic torque production in an electric motor at certain positions in the sine waves and in this manner creates constant motion or speed regulation regardless if you're going 1 rpm, 5000 rpm. They provide excellent characteristics over single phase applications making them extremely effective with all kinds of appliances using low to high voltage levels like refrigerator fans. This means one does not need special devices like a transformer. The shade-pole rotor also contains several magnetized bars at an equidistant space from the others giving some slight reluctance which produces extra field. All this contributes for smooth torque at all the times under various load condition on these particular shaded pole motors so they don't slip like many variable frequency AC and single phase machines. As such it can operate in any speed between the starting no-load low speeds up to running maximum constant no-speed loss loads conditions. The application includes, pumps, refrigerators fans, etc.. They have good operating features for industrial power equipment use on factory equipment also including 12 and 24v low current requirements or DC input applications where these devices must provide efficient torque outputs consistently like other similar AC single phase machines such as single pole shaded pole synchronous machines, shaded armature wound rotor types of three-phase or poly-phase configurations - though those would not use just single one magnet poles so there you are at shade-pole design, which also known also by term magnetic pole motors
