Motor Guard for Upgraded KingKing 90GT Micro Quadcopter
thingiverse
A few months ago, I took my KingKong 90GT and made a key modification to make room for larger propellers. Moving the motors outward by quite a few millimeters can be done if you avoid the two innermost screw holes on the frame and are willing to use only two screws on each motor. This upgrade works surprisingly well, allowing me to upgrade from the stock 2" props to 2.5" props, which increases flight times and thrust. The best part is that it's a free upgrade, and I'm very pleased with the results. I've essentially turned my KingKong 90GT into a 105GT. Most of the time, I was flying over grass or dirt, and the hardest thing I'd crash into would be a tree. In those cases, all I ever managed to do was break a prop. However, in recent weeks, we've been flying in a new parking lot, and I've been crashing into concrete. Most of these crashes happen when I run out of battery, but every now and then it happens because I forget that the KingKong 90GT doesn't have nearly as much thrust as my real racing drone. This modification leaves the motors quite exposed without any carbon fiber to protect them. I recently had a voltage drop severe enough that I fell from the sky near the top of a power loop. It took about four seconds to hit the ground, and I severely bent a motor. While motors are cheap, I figured I could add a little protection to my modified KingKong 90GT. These little discs extend past the base of the motor, and the small nubbins on top are just as thick as the carbon fiber frame. This allows you to use four screws—I sized this for 7mm screws, since those come with every set of 2.4" and 2.5" props. In a crash, this bumper will hit the ground first. Using four screws should help hold the bottom of the motor in place, and the bumper should transfer most of the shock to the frame. I've crashed a few times, and they seem to be working well. The part I uploaded is 2mm wider than the bumpers I'm running on my own drone. I printed mine in ABS. We'll see just what sort of crashes they can stand up to. * The KingKong 90GT Micro Drone Is Bananas * KingKong 90GT Upgrades
