An alternating-current (AC) motor operates utilizing an ever-changing electric current. It usually comprises two primary components: the exterior stationary stator, furnished with coils that receive AC to generate a revolving magnetic field, and the internal rotor connected to the output shaft which experiences torque from the turning field. Two primary types of AC motors exist based on their rotor type - induction motors, slightly slower than the supply frequency, with induced current creating the rotor's magnetic field; synchronous motors, not reliant on induction, capable of spinning exactly at the supply frequency or a sub-multiple of it. The rotor's magnetic field in this motor is supplied through slip rings or permanent magnets. Other types of AC motors include eddy current motors and mechanically commutated AC/DC machines with speed depending on voltage and winding arrangement.
