Save Files as Step Documents Many programs and software save their configuration options as "stp" (STEP) file types. However, it can sometimes be confusing to determine how these specific files work within particular applications. For users trying to access or read these types of documents on a personal level outside the confines of that given software package itself, opening an stp document using an alternate reader such as notepad is recommended due to the lack of built in editing capabilities usually contained within native .stp file formats. One way to open an .stp document successfully is to rename it so its new extension would be more compatible with current versions of popular text readers. However it may lose any data specific only for use by the application, this will have the advantage of opening on many operating systems but again you risk loss of critical information from original .stp files used by their intended software.
