In West Virginia folklore, the mysterious creature known as the Mothman was reportedly sighted in Point Pleasant from November 12, 1966, to December 15, 1967. The first newspaper report appeared on November 16, 1966, in the Point Pleasant Register. The national press soon picked up the story and spread it across the US. Gray Barker introduced the Mothman to a wider audience in 1970, while John Keel's 1975 book, The Mothman Prophecies, claimed supernatural events were connected to the sightings and the Silver Bridge collapse. The legend has even made its way into popular culture through the 2002 film "The Mothman Prophecies" starring Richard Gere and an annual festival in Point Pleasant dedicated to the myth.
