Mother Teresa MC, known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta (26 August 1910 - 5 September 1997), was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary who lived a life dedicated to serving others. Born in Skopje, the capital city of the Republic of Macedonia, she spent eighteen years in her homeland before moving to Ireland and then India, where she made her home for most of her life. In 1950, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation that has grown into a global network with over 4,500 sisters working in 133 countries. These devoted women run homes for people suffering from HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; dispensaries and mobile clinics; children's and family counselling programs; orphanages; and schools. Members of the Missionaries of Charity take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, as well as a fourth vow to provide "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor". This commitment has earned Teresa numerous honors, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. Teresa was canonized on September 4, 2016, and her feast day is celebrated on September 5. While she was a controversial figure during her life and after her death, Teresa's selfless work has inspired countless people around the world. Some have praised her anti-abortion views, while others have criticized her for her stance. Additionally, some have questioned the living conditions in the houses for the dying that Teresa founded. Despite these criticisms, her authorized biography was written by Navin Chawla and published in 1992, and numerous books and films have been made about her remarkable life.
