Mother of Twins funerary stele at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
This mysterious funerary stele lies incomplete and unidentified: crucial details and features are missing from the mother's and one child's heads, along with an inscription that would have crowned the top section, possibly a pediment. The deceased figure to the left is undoubtedly a young woman who succumbed to childbirth complications, cradling her wrapped child in her arms. A small servant stands before her, clad in a long-sleeved tunic and sporting a cécryphale around their head, potentially holding another infant, hidden beneath a hat aside from its feet. Funerary figures of the 4th century often featured one or two children; however, this piece breaks that mold by depicting twins. Typically, funerary steles would be situated near or surrounding a grave site, serving as both tomb and memorial. The depicted figures might represent the deceased individual or symbolize their character.
