The mosque, with a capacity of 10,000, is an Ottoman architecture design built between 1830 and 1848 in Cairo's Citadel. Completed during Said Pasha's reign in 1857, it was designed by Istanbul architect Yusuf Bushnak, modeled after the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. The foundation utilized debris from previous Citadel structures. Before completion, alabaster panels were removed for Abbas I's palaces, replaced with painted wood resembling marble. In 1899, cracks appeared and inadequate repairs ensued until a complete restoration ordered by King Fuad in 1931, completed under King Farouk in 1939. Muhammad Ali Pasha is buried in a Carrara marble tomb within the mosque's courtyard, transferred from Hawsh al-Basha in 1857.
