The Bab al-Mardum mosque later became a church called Christ of the Light; it is the best-preserved structure dating back to the Muslim period in Toledo, Spain, which was established over ten centuries ago. This small oratory was attached to the city gate (Bab al-Mardum) and used by both newcomers arriving in Toledo and those preparing to exit the city. It was built during the time of the Caliphate of Córdoba in 999 AD, as indicated by the inscription on its access strip. The apse was added during the twelfth century when Alfonso VI handed it over to the knights of the Order of San Juan; they converted the area into a Chapel of the Holy Cross at that time. This extension is widely regarded as the oldest surviving example of Moorish art. It is situated in the suburb of San Nicolas, Spain.
