The Mosin Nagant series of rifles, including the M1891, M91 Dragoon, M07 carbine, M91/30, M91/30 PU sniper, M38 carbine, M44 carbine, and M59 carbine, is a five-shot, bolt-action, internal magazine-fed rifle developed by Captain Sergei Mosin and Léon Nagant between 1882 and 1891. Used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and various other nations, it is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history with over 37 million units made since its inception in 1891. Despite its age, it has been used in numerous conflicts worldwide up to the modern day. The original design was influenced by the need for modernization after Russian troops suffered heavy losses against Turkish forces equipped with Winchester repeating rifles during the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-1878. Three rifles were submitted for evaluation in 1889, and the Mosin design was chosen despite initial criticisms due to its simpler mechanism and higher production quality.
